Background for teachers

This page has been designed for year 3 and 4 students. Students are able to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the steps taken to get cotton from the farm to the making of clothes, as well as the major areas that cotton are grown in within Australia.

 

This unit could also be aligned with science curriculum. This unit provides students with an opportunity to interact with real world learning and knowledge. It focuses on the key ideas of animal ethics. This involve caring, using, or interacting with animals. It also focuses on system thinking. Students recognise the connectedness of and interactions between people, places and events in local and wider world contexts and consider the impact their designs and actions have in a connected world. This unit integrates a number of general capabilities including; Critical and Creative thinking through posing questions, identifying and clarifying information and ideas and organising and processing information (Australian Curriculum, 2016), and Intercultural Understanding through exploring and comparing cultural practices (Australian Curriculum, 2016). 

 

Differentiations will be made in regards to being sensitive to the cultural backgrounds discussed. A range of learning styles will also be taken into account when collecting and displaying data. it will also facilitate students with different learning styles through using a number of visual, auditory and written resources used throughout the unit.

(ACTDEP018)-Plan a sequence of production steps when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively (Australian Curriculum, 2016)

 

(ACTDEK012)-Investigate food and fibre production and food technologies used in modern and traditional societies (Australian Curriculum, 2016)

Notes for teachers:

 

  • Lessons are approximately 60 minutes long.

 

  • Students have no prior knowledge of cotton or the processes that cotton go through.

 

  • This unit is designed to be completed collaboratively and interactively, but students should keep a work book with the information and their findings.

  • The completed booklets are to be used to inform other students in the school (May be placed in the library).
